The area where Richfield stands now used to be a small farming community back in the 1850s. Due to its proximity to Minneapolis and Fort Snelling it was inevitable that further development would happen. One of the 1st settlers was a man by the name of Riley Bartholomew, a former general in the Ohio Militia and became Richfield Justice of the Peace and eventually a Minnesota State Senator. Early settlers were of German, Irish, Swedish and Norwegian lineage. In 1908, Richfield was incorporated into a village but annexations over the years decreased the size of the city.
